Muddy Boot Organic Festival

Last weekend's Muddy Boot Organic Festival fulfilled its billing as a soulful celebration of sustainable living. About 4,000 people attended this event at the St. Philip Neri church complex on Division and 16th. The attendees enthusiastically embraced the sustainability ethic by generating only one medium sized bag of garbage for the entire 3 days of the event. This amazing statistic was achieved with the help of New Seasons Green Team, a dedicated recycling co-ordinator and the cooperation of vendors, attendees, and volunteers.

At The One Stop Sustainability Shop booth we signed up 102 new customers for our monthly newsletter and managed to -- finally -- raffle away our sustainable gift basket. We spoke with many people who were committed to trying new strategies in order to attain a more sustainable lifestyle, like a woman who was only buying products made in the USA, or the 12-year old who spent her allowance to buy a reusable lunch bag so she wouldn't have to use a paper bag for her lunch.

Wow Styrofoam!!!

Thanks to all the folks who came down to recycle their styrofoam at our store. We filled an entire room with the nasty plastic and had to rent a Uhaul to transport it to Recology. We then proceeded to shock some of the workers at the recycling center and fill a shipping container full with styrofoam. Here are some pictures we took of the event and the transport of the syrofoam.

I was tempted to build an igloo!

We will have a booth at the Multnomah Days Fair this Saturday, August 21st from 9am to 4pm.

There will be a variety of food, music and vendors with a parade at 10am. Stop by our booth and enter our raffle to win a sustainable gift basket!!

Multnomah Days will be in Multnomah Village in SW Portland, in the area of SW 35th and Capitol Highway. Our booth will be near SW Capitol Highway and 34th Avenue.

Note: Unfortunately our store on 18th and Lovejoy will be closed during the fair, but will be open for regular hours on Monday August 23rd. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Hot Hawthorne Street Fair Redux

As everyone who was in Portland last Sunday knows -- it was H0T! This did not deter hundreds of people from attending the Hawthorne Street Fair and coming into the One Stop Sustainability Shop booth. Thanks everyone who visited us! The best part of having a sustainability shop is talking to customers who are sincerely committed to reducing their ecological footprint and living sustainably. I get energized as well as getting good ideas. One good idea from a customer at the fair was to take a roll of BioBags (or other compostable bags) when I go produce shopping and use them instead of getting plastic bags at the store or market. Then use these bags to store the produce in the fridge and use them over (and over) again when the produce is gone. That way I'm getting off the plastic bag train. At the moment I've got a Biobag filled with vegetable scraps in my outdoor compost pile and I'm seeing how long it takes to compost (ie biodegrade). I stuck it in there on Sunday so I should probably check it today and see how it's composting. Tune in later!

Another customer gave me a tip on a book called A Year Without Made in China about a family living on the gulf coast who tried to go for a year without buying anything made in China. I picked up the book and have been reading it non-stop since Sunday. Author Sara Bongiorni's frustrations resonate with Jessica and I as we try to buy products to sell in our store that are made as close to Portland as possible and at least made in the USA. We've found there are no CFL's (compact fluorescent lights) made in the US -- none, nada, zip. Not that we have been able to find, anyway. If you, dear readers, have unearthed any US made CFL's, please, please, please let us know. No stainless steel drink containers are made in the US either. It seems we are as dependent on China for daily life items as we are on the Middle East for oil. This doesn't seem to be a good trend to me.

Jessica and Barbara just returned from picking up more
clothes dryng racks from Eugene, Oregon. We are very
pleased with the popularity of our locally made drying racks
and glad that so many people are choosing to save money
and energy by not using electric or gas dryers.

After a long search we have found made in the USA
100% recycled polystyrene dustpans to go with our made in America
Hanset Brothers brooms. Hanset Brothers brooms used to be made
in Portland by the Hanset family, but are currently manufactured in
California out of broom corn, a type of corn not used for consumption.

The Gulf oil spill is devastating to say the least. I love the City of New Orleans and have always wanted to experience the Louisiana bayou by boat. The Gulf oil spill is now threatening this wonderful marsh, the entire Gulf coast and an unfathomable number of species and possibly the entire ocean. If we are going to play the blame game than we need to include ourselves in the line up. As humans our demand for oil drives this kind of industry. Is this what we want? How do we change? Take a moment to think about it.

Better Living Show

The One Stop Sustainability Shop participated in the Better Living Show, the Northwest's largest green living expo, on the weekend of March 26th to 28th. Our exhibit attracted many visitors interested in living more sustainably. Wooden clothes drying racks were particularly magnetic, bringing in customers of different ages, some of whom reported having drying racks that were 40 years old. We are very encouraged by the number of people who don't want to waste energy or money using a gas or electric clothes dryer. Why not let the air dry your clothes for free!
A young French woman told us in France people don't use clothes dryers at all, only racks. WE SOLD OUT OF RACKS on the last day of the show! But we've picked up more large racks as well as a few medium racks and one super large mega rack.
Customers were also happy to find our wooden plastic bag dryers. Great for drying out those ziplock sandwich bags or any plastic bags right on your counter - no more ziplock bag lines over the sink! Our bamboo untensil sets, biodegradable sponges and stainless steel beverage containers were great sellers as well.
Jessika, one of the store owners, was particularly taken by several raptors the Oregon Zoo brought to the show - a red-tailed hawk, a small screech owl, and a kestrel. It was wonderful to see these wild animals up close and it was amazing how well they tolerated the throngs of people.

Our drying racks are made in Eugene, Oregon from local reclaimed Douglas Fir. The racks are larger than those you find in most stores and are the most sustainable choice in drying laundry. One of the most important things you can do is to use a stainless steel water bottle for cold and hot liquids. It's not only healthier but also prevents hundreds of disposable bottles and cups from clogging up our landfills and littering the streets. Stainless steel water bottles are safe and non-toxic as well as durable. We carry two brands now; EarthLust and Klean Kanteen. Holiday Drying Rack!

My grandmother put together this lovely holiday drying rack. We sell these amazing, large drying racks for laundry.These racks are made of beautiful reclaimed Oregon Douglas Fir in Eugene Oregon. They measure 65" tall, 35" wide and 17" deep, and although they are larger than your average drying rack they still fit in a standard bath tub! You wont find these anywhere else in Portland!
